Notes for ORAH MIKE O'HAIR:

Recollections of Dorothy Louise O'Hair 2/2/2002:

Uncle Orah and Aunt Myrtle lived in Greencastle, all my life, in a very comfortable home.  Uncle Orah worked at the Post Office in Greencastle as long as I knew.  After my mother died in 1932, I lived with them for a brief period of time.  Aunt Myrtle was the kindest, gentlest woman I ever knew.  Her children were almost grown at that time.  They had 2 sons, Jess and Orville (who was killed over Germany in WW II and a daughter, Ethel Marie, who graduated from DePauw University and taught school most of her life.  They also had a daughter, Esther, who also was injured at birth, much more restricted than her cousin, Louise.  She needed constant care, like a baby.  No one could understand anything she tried to say except Aunt Mrytle.  She outlived both parents and then lived with Marie for a short time before they put her in a nursing home.

My father lived with them for a number of years after his parents died and later his grandparents died.  There was a large gap in their ages (about 20 years).

The three brothers seemed to care a great deal about one another, even though they were separated by age and distance.  After their parents' death, Sam was taken by a family to grow up in Pleasanton, Kansas.  Most of the family originated in or around Paris, Illinois.

Recollections of Dorothy Louise O'Hair 2/2/2002:

I first met my Uncle Sam in 1940-41 when I was 14 years old.  He came to Greencastle, Indiana to visit my father, Everett Ryan O'Hair, and my other Uncle, Orah Michael O'Hair.

Uncle Sam lived with his wife, Carrie, and daughter, Louise, in Pleasanton, Kansas.  He worked on the railroad all his life as far as I know, riding the rails on one of the little pump cars.  I presume looking for trouble spots that needed repair or for switching purposes.  Aunt Carrie wasn't free to come to Greencastle to visit with Uncle Sam as their daughter, Louise, was an invalid who needed constant care.  My father told me that Louise had been injured at birth.  She could walk with help and Aunt Carrie said they took her for car rides on Sundays.  Years later in 1952, when my children were 3, 4 1/2, 6, & 7, we moved to Dallas, Texas and went to Pleasanton, Kansas to meet Aunt Carrie and visit Uncle Sam & Louise.  We enjoyed a couple of days visit with them before we travelled on to Dallas.  Uncle Sam and Aunt Carrie were very nice, pleasant people.
