John was a very strong man.  When I (John Everett Reckel - grandson) was about 15-16, I witnessed him (he was about 65) pick up 2 50-pound bags of grain by the corner, one in each hand, and swing them up so that one landed on each shoulder and walked across the barn lot like it was nothing.

John had a sweet tooth.  When he was growing up, his father would buy candy and give it to his daughters, but deny it to John, saying "Candy is for girls".

John worked with his father on the family "truck garden" (on Bluff Road, South of Indianapolis) where they raised vegetables and took them to the Farmer's Market in Indianapolis and sold them.  That was John's job from the time he was about 10.  He drove a team of horses to the old Farmer's Market at the intersection of Virginia & South St., and sold the produce from the wagon.

John's mother died when he was 6 years old.  His mother's sister, Elizabeth, raised the 4 children.  His mother was 38 at her death.

I gather that his father never remarried.  I am also told that Aunt Elizabeth never married.

John died of leukemia of the blood.

John was a farmer for all of his life.  He had a succession of farms.  All over central Indiana.

The farm most remembered by all the grandchildren was about 2 miles east of Parkersburg.  It was about 80 acres with a huge house.  It was built about 1825 as the first mansion of the _______ family.  He lived there until a few years before he died.

John knew German, but after WWI started, he seldom ever spoke it.  But for years, he would only go to Sacred Heart Church, where confessions were heard in German.

HAUSER61,61 06 May 1915 in Sacred Heart Church; Indianapolis, Indiana.  She was born 01 Jan 1897 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and died Aug 1969 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Notes for HERMAN ROECKEL:

St. Joseph Cemetery Lot Card - See Jacob Lichtenauer Scrapbook entry 1.

Per Ruth Barbara Roeckel Atkins:

Herman married Barbara Hauser when he was 24.  They had 2 children, George and Ruth.

Herman went to Sacred Heart school.  He sometimes played hooky to go fishing.  He worked at Madden's Woodworking shop and at Lieber's Picture Framing and at Hilgemyer's Meat Packing and at Stark and Wetzel Meat Packing.

He moved to Funke's Farm for 5 years.  He then moved to a farm at Edinburg, Indiana for 5 years.  He then moved back to Indianapolis, Indiana.

Louis and Herman were on the McClainsville Baseball team. Lewis was the pitcher.  Herman (fatty) was the manager.  Grandma would go to the games.  They were played on a vacant lot.  She would argue the plays.  Sometimes she would be on the field out to the pitcher's mound.

I don't know if it was Katherine or Margaret who was Dad's Grandma.  Guess Dad was a handful.  His Grandma lived with them and stood up for him.  He could do no wrong in her eyes.

Notes for BARBARA M. HAUSER:

Per Ruth Barbara Roeckel:

Barbara went to Emaus Lutheran School.  She worked at Indianapolis Post Card and at C.B. Cones (an overall factory).  She had a friend Gertrude McClain.

When Herman announced he was going to marry Barbara Hauser (a Lutheran), Grandpa Roeckel hit the ceiling.  He even went to the priest about it.  The priest talked to him and told him to let them get married.

A cousin Emma and Ed Borket (spelling possibly not correct).  They lived on Union St. Aunt Mag lived with them.  Every summer - when we lived on the farm - a letter would come, sometimes on Sat., asking if it was all right to come on Sunday.  My mother didn't like it, but she would scrape a good meal together for them.  We were poor; they were rich.  They drove a nice car and had nice clothes.  When we moved to Indianapolis, they never once came to see us.
