Notes for WILLIAM SOUTHERLAND:

The name of this William's wife is not known. When he was at the age of thirty he received the rank of Captain. The significance of this title is not known; he may have been a ship's Captain or in the Militia. For a short period of time he was associated with the tobacco, however, growing tobacco was not popular at the time, because of the high taxes imposed upon the planters by the English Crown.

Stories were told by travelers that political, religious and living conditions were more favorable in the Colony of North Carolina. He may have moved to the Dan River region of North Carolina. No marriage record was found in Virginia, which leads to belief he married in North Carolina. It appears he later returned to Virginia.

There is no absolute proof, but in the general consensus, he was the father of William, born ca 1742.
